...but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. --Isaiah 40:31

September 26th - CultureFest/OktoberFest at City Hall Plaza in Downtown Springfield.  CCDC partnered with the ASL Club from Springfield High School. Thanks to Arlon Nash for organizing the booth and to the many students who worked together to provide information to visitors.

September 13th - Columbus Colony Festival

On August 30th, we met at the church to discuss activities like camping, car wash and a trip to Columbus Colony Festival on September 13th. It was decided to postpone our camping trip until next spring to respect the camping trip hosted by DCRC October 9 - 11. We will try for a bowling event in October. We will have a car wash to earn money for the future camping trip. We will travel to the Columbus Colony Festival individually rather than rent a van since there was not enough interest in a van. We had snacks and social time after the meeting. About 25 people attended.

August 2nd -  Cookout at Buck Creek State Park

At the meeting on July 19th, we met at the church to discuss upcoming activities like camping, Dragon's Baseball game, car wash and a trip to Columbus Colony Festival on September 13th.  Beth Cassese (Case Manager for DCRC's Springfield Office)  talked about the food pantries available locally.  About two dozen members showed up and we welcomed several new first time visitors.

On June 25th we met at Veteran's Park for a cookout followed by a performance by "The Flying Kamarozov Brothers". About two dozen members showed up (despite the rainclouds!) and worked together for a fun evening for all. As usual, Barb Dunaway did a great job interpreting the show!

At our May 17th meeting we were treated to a special presentation by Tyra Jackson, Executive Director of Project Woman. We also held elections, renewed memberships and started planning summer activities. A reporter and photographer from the Springfield News-Sun attended. Please see the article in the May 18th edition of the News-Sun:

“Mother Father Deaf Day”

Covenant Presbyterian Church hosted its first Mother Father Deaf Day celebration on Sunday, April 26, beginning with an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreted worship service with  Signing Choirs from Springfield High School and Sinclair Community College joining our own Choir at 10:30 a.m., followed by a potluck luncheon at 12 noon.

Mother Father Deaf Day was established in 1996 by CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) to honor deaf parents and recognize the gifts of culture and language received from them.  It has been celebrated in cities in California, in Denver and in WashingtonD.C., but this was the first time it was celebrated in Southwest Ohio.  The celebration was open to the public – both hearing and deaf.

Covenant Church was the fitting location to celebrate since we host the monthly meeting of the Clark County Deaf Community, which is supported by our church, The Springfield Foundation, and the Deaf Community Resource Center.  In addition, sign-up for a two-week ASL class, taught by Marianna Stewart, filled up quickly at the church to support our youth trip to Montreat, NC this summer and in anticipation of Mother Father Deaf Day.  This introduction to ASL and the deaf culture will always come in handy since ASL is said to be one of the top four most commonly used languages in our country.
